1936 MORRIS 8 SERIES 1, 2 DOOR, MOT AND TAX

1936 MORRIS 8 SERIES 1, 2 DOOR, MOT AND TAX

Very original car.  Only 63,000 documented miles from new.  I have been dealing in classic cars for over 30 years and I can honestly state I have never seen a more detailed comprehensive history than this.

It was owned by a gentleman in Norfolk from 1938 to 1996, where upon it was bought by a collector, who has kept it in his collection ever since. With it comes a genuine 1939 Boots diary in which every single gallon of petrol bought and the cost has been faithfully recorded right through until 1964 when the car was laid up.  Every job, including washing and hoovering the car, has been recorded.  The details are staggering.  Where an entry says “decarbonising carried out” there is a corresponding invoice dated exactly as per the entry date.

Here are some extracts from the records:-

3rd Sept 1939  - “Headlamp bulbs withdrawn from public sale”

4th Sept 1939 - “Side lamps covered with paper inside, tail lamps with 2 layers of greaseproof paper and insulating tape stuck on”

For those of you not old enough to know, this was carried out due to the blackout regulations during the war.  Quote on 23rd Sept 1939 “Petrol rationing starts, am allowed 5 gallons ordinary and 9 gallons of extra – 70% of what I want”.

 17th Oct 1939 - “2 gallons petrol 1/8d a gallon now!!”

15th Nov 1939 - “Hit a big ginger cat, believe two wheels went over it during blackout”

23rd Dec 1939 - “Petrol now 1/10d a gallon!”

31st Dec 1939 - “Laid car up”

The car was laid up until 1946 and then the records continue in full detail until 1st Jan 1964 when he stopped using it.

It was then stored from 1964 until 1993 when he decided to recommission it.  Quote from records 19th Dec 1994 - “Christmas present from me to myself WS8601 came home after 2 year overhaul”.

The car passed to his son in 1996/7 and was subsequently sold by auction to the last owner.  The history also includes every single insurance cover note from 1939 to 1995.  It still has the petrol ration coupons from 1950/51 and the original envelope from the War Department postmarked 1946, which they were posted in.  It is undoubtedly the most fascinating vehicle history I have ever seen.  There are old MOTs and the buff logbook and much more.  It still has its original registration number which has a valuation of £2,300.  But who could possibly remove it???

Oh, the price  -  £5,995
